A confidential slide shown during a recent Samsung presentation has revealed that the company is targeting a 2025 timeframe for producing a 576 MP camera sensor. Samsung has already announced its plans to eventually release a sensor that can beat out the human eye resolution perception of 500 MP.

For those who think 108 MP and 200 MP camera sensors are excessive for a smartphone, 576 MP is going to seem like unrestrained extravagance. However, it appears that’s exactly what Samsung has got in its playbook for 2025, at least in terms of sensor size development. While some outlets have reported that this huge camera could be heading for smartphones, it seems more likely it will end up in something else, at least at the beginning.

The 576 MP sensor plans were revealed in a slide that was shown by Haechang Lee, Samsung’s Senior VP and Head of Automotive Sensors, at a presentation held at a systems summit organized by SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International). The slide (see below) depicts Samsung’s sensor resolution progress from 2000 up to 2021, or from 0.3 MP to 108 MP. Then there’s a break in the chart's directional arrow, followed by “2025”, “575 MP”, and a picture of a human eye.
